January 25th Homework

Berkenkotter Summary:
In her article, Decisions and Revisions: The Planning Strategies of a Public Writer, Carol Berkenkotter describes her experimental studies about writing processes for different people and how they work. She based most of her experiment from Donald Murray and got all of his thoughts and ideas about his writing pieces.

Murray Summary:
In his article, Response of a Laboratory Rat- or Being Protocoled, Donald Murray describes his own writing processes and explains the way that it works.

QD:
1.) Murray's writing process ideas are good ones. But I don't write the way he does because my mind just travels in its own direction.
2.) He doesn't communicate with his audience as much as other academic writers do. I write in a similar way because I find it hard sometimes to communicate with my audience. Although I don't communicate with my audience as well as I should, I do think about what my audience would think if I wrote something in particular.
3.) She started to think about planning and revising a little more than she did before she conducted this experiment. She understands that planning may be the most important part to writing a paper because you need to have an idea as to what the paper is going to say and to have an effective argument.

AEI 1:
When I am writing, I try to only focus on getting the information I need and applying it to the paper. I never go a little farther into my research. I think that I am an average writer even though I only write papers for schoolwork, but I can create a good paper if I apply myself to it.

MM:
One thing that I learned to write more effectively would to spend more time planning and revising my papers. If I could plan ahead and know what I'm going to write, I would have a better path to getting a paper finished. And if I revise more, I would have a more academic paper that could relate and communicate with my audience better.

  1. I think applying yourself to writing is key. A lot of people think that writers can just sit down and write at any given moment (which in some cases is true) but the reason they can do it is because they apply themselves to being a writer not just what they are writing. I try to always imagine myself writing a great paper that the professor/teacher loves and then usually..it happens. Sort of predicting the future with hope.

  2. you and i have very similar ways of writing when you say you write to get the information needed across.

  3. I agree that revising is key especially when you are trying to make a connection with your audience. I also agree with the fact that you thought Murray did not communicate with his audience as much as some of the other academic papers we have read.
