February 6th Homework

Summary:
In her article, Sponsors of Literacy, Deborah Brandt explains the ways writers become literate and the ways they acquire those skills. She also gives her opinions on the literacy standards that people follow.

QD 1,3,4:
1.) She defines the term literacy sponsor as agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who teach, model, support, recruit, extort, deny, or suppress literacy and gain advantage by it in some way. Some of the strong characteristics of sponsors are religious and knowledgable.

3.) The sponsors seem to apply more to the upper-classmen than the working-class because society believed that the upper-class would be in better use of literacy skills than the working-class.

4.) Stratified is defined in this paragraph as separating the different classes of people, and the stakes she is referring to are how each class level deserves equal amount of literacy skills.

AEI 1:
I learned about literacy the most with my family, school, and sports. My family and coaches in sports taught me about the importances of responsibility. My school taught me academic and social literacies.

Reflection:
I thought this article was interesting; I have a better understanding of how and why literacies were learned throughout history. But there were some parts that were confusing and I couldn't quite get the message of what she was trying to get across.

  1. I think that you understood the article a lot, and I definitely agree that there were parts that were just a little bit confusing. And the thought of sports learning helping you learn literacies I thought the same thing! Great minds think alike! (:

  2. Joey,

In your summaries, try to explain why the author says what she does rather than just what she says. What is the point? What is she trying to do? Try using the template I included on the informal writing assignment sheet.
